As part of Rocky View County’s ongoing emergency preparedness program, Emergency Services regularly conducts large-scale training exercises with partner agencies to simulate real-world emergency response. In 2022, an Emergency Management Exercise in Bragg Creek simulated a major wildfire on Moose Mountain. I was tasked with capturing photo and video footage throughout the day to produce a short wrap-up video that would inform the public, highlight the scale of coordination involved, and thank the many partners who participated.
Working with one other team member, I filmed staging areas, press conferences, evacuation centres, and public interactions across multiple locations as the exercise unfolded. Because the scenario covered a wide geographic area and events were happening simultaneously, we had to stay mobile and work closely with the Deputy Chief to anticipate key moments, while also moving between sites to capture additional footage as opportunities arose. The final 55-second video was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, set to stock music, and included text overlays to provide context and a closing credit thanking participating partners. The pacing was intentionally quick to meet the under-one-minute requirement while still conveying the scope of the exercise.
The video was reviewed and approved by both the Emergency Services department and the Communications Manager before being released on the County’s YouTube and social media channels in the days following the event. It received positive feedback from residents online and in person, helping demonstrate the effort, coordination, and planning that goes into emergency preparedness within the County.
