For the Fall 2017 issue of Cochrane Living, I designed a two-page editorial spread profiling hometown NHL prospect Dillon Dubé and his experience at the Calgary Flames rookie camp. I was supplied with photos for the feature and developed a visual concept that treated some of them like collectible hockey cards laid across an icy surface. Paired with a red and yellow palette inspired by the Flames, the layout created an energetic, fan-centric design that connected instantly to the team’s identity.
Working within the magazine’s style guide for fonts and formatting, I handled all creative direction for the layout. The spread was built in Adobe InDesign with image editing completed in Photoshop. I collaborated closely with the art director for design approval, while the editor reviewed text flow and provided rewrites where needed to fit the space. Because the theme and layout direction were clear from the outset, production moved smoothly and adjustments were limited to minor text tightening and image scaling.
The final spread delivered a dynamic, visually engaging feature that showcased both the excitement of Dubé’s story and the distinct visual character of the Calgary Flames.
